a very easy way to find out how the drainage is in different parts of your garden is to go out right at dusk and take a couple pictures with the flash on your camera. obviously, don’t water before you do this. there’s not a whole lot you can do once you’ve got your plants in the ground to improve the drainage, but now i’ll know what spots need work once i’m ready to pull up whatever’s there at the end of the season. the darkest areas are the paths that i walk on. the soil is very compacted and it’s basically stayed muddy since day 1. you can see that the soil is a lot looser around most of the plants, but there are still damp areas. this picture is after a week of off and on rainstorms, and 2 days of solid sunshine after the rain ended.
