i ran by the garden this morning to see what the damage was from the storm last night. so far, so good. the netting held up just fine, but the fences fell over. i guess i need to dig them in or stake the bottoms or something.

i bought a tray of “jiffy pods” to start some seeds on the windowsill at work. today i started calendula and lobelia - they are small flowers that are good for borders, and are supposed to naturally repel some pests. i’m pretty sure my boss thinks i’m planting weed. anyway, they should be ready to go out in the garden in about a month. the consensus online is that they’re good to use if you don’t have the money or space for bags of soil-free potting mix, but that whatever they make the netting out of doesn’t degrade quick enough to let the developing roots break through.

we’re supposed to get 4 more days of rain starting thursday, but who knows. they said we’d get over 2 inches yesterday and we got exactly 1.19 inches. i’m going to try to check out the garden tomorrow on my lunch and see if it’s dried out any.
