day 29 continued

yay! daikon! it’s almost a month old now. i think i’ve thinned the plants out enough, so i stuck some mulch on them (way after this picture) and i’m going to try to keep the root tops covered up as much as i can so they don’t get bitter and green.

PEAAAAAS
i was so worried these weren’t going to sprout, but it’s been exactly 2 weeks since i planted them and i think almost every one has sprouted. they’re such a great color against the dirt. i have to figure out how to build a trellis for these next. they’re not supposed to get too high - only about 2 feet tall - but i think i need to at least put a string and some sticks there for them to climb on or the tops will fall over.

this lettuce is 14 days old! supposedly in another 14 days i will be able to eat it.

this was how most of the garden looked at the end of the day. i mulched the tops of the daikon and the oldest radishes, i planted a big square of “bring home the butterflies” flower mix, i planted some more mizuna and a few of my edamame (i showed these earlier), and i pulled out a ton of weeds. i dug little ditches around the edge of each plot because every time i water it, the soil settles and makes it harder to tell where i dug originally. i’m going to plant lobelias and marigolds as a border, i think. when i was a kid, my dad would always have lobelias, sweet alyssum, and marigolds, but i never liked the sweet alyssum that much. lobelia is supposed to be a trailing plant but we always used it for borders.
i did so much work today but it feels like it’s finally starting to come to something! we might get some rain next weekend, which would be great because i’ve been out there watering twice a week. i don’t need to water a lot each time i come out, but until i got the mulch the top layer of the soil would dry out super quickly and crust over. hopefully the mulch will change that.
