day 15 - november 15, 2009
time on site: 1 hr, 30 min
new this visit: radish easter egg mix ($1.25), loose leaf “majesty” lettuce ($2.95), “green arrow” peas ($2.60), “mignon” carrots ($2.95), “mirabeau” radish ($.99), “purple haze” carrots ($2.95), shovel (gift!)no pictures, because dirt looks like dirt and i’ve already put up plenty of dug-up dirt pictures.
having a shovel makes it a lot easier to prep the soil than a trowel. i put down about 3 18” rows of each kind of carrot and radish, a 2.5’ row of peas, and 2 18” rows of lettuce. i didn’t have time to get the chinese cabbage or the other kinds of lettuce in before the sun set. i dug up all sorts of crazy things today, mostly pieces of tiles and paper, but also about 10 of these weird little onion things. they don’t smell like onion so i guess they must have been daffodils or something that the person before me planted.
i need to get a watering can so i don’t blast all the seeds right out of the dirt when i water. i still have about half the patch with nothing planted in it. i keep reading that you should try to stagger the planting so you get to pick your harvest longer instead of all at once. hopefully i wake up early enough to go out sometime this week before work so i can put in the cabbage and the other lettuces.
