basil story

the basil’s last moments in the glass
a friend of ours, jackie, invited me and andrew over one day in early july (i think) to play video games and eat good food and sent me home with a paper bag containing 2 big sprigs of basil from her backyard. i put them in a glass of water in the fridge so they wouldn’t get limp before i finished using all the leaves in pesto or whatever. a few days later, i looked in the fridge and noticed that the basil had started to root. i moved the glass over to the windowsill, where it sat up until today (november 1). by now it’s painfully apparent that “small clear glass with no soil” is not a proper place to grow your basil. the roots are totally bound up and there’s weird damaged spots on the leaves. i’ve tried to loosen the roots up with a fork a couple times and each time the plant will flourish for several days until the extra space in the glass is occupied with more bound-up roots. i kept putting off repotting it, but now that i’ve got my garden space the basil has to leave the windowsill.

almost there… this is the basil in its highly technical transport system (moist paper towel and baggie). i learned this from a job in san francisco. heh.
