“field notes” - first in an almost-daily series
time on site: 30 min
new this visit: basil (from windowsill), baby bok choy (nijiya, $2), daikon (nijiya, $2), gloves (target, $5), trowel (target, $5)
loosened the soil up on the right side of the patch, then watered it. dug a hole for basil into rear right corner. next to basil, 2 12” rows of daikon. couldn’t read back of packet (it was in japanese) so i put the seeds in about an inch down and am hoping for the best. dug 5 12” rows for baby bok choy in front right corner. again, i couldn’t read the back of the packet. i’m not expecting everything i plant to sprout or do well, and i also have a ton of seeds in the mail that should be here by friday or saturday. i want to plant a little bit of everything when they get here, so i’m only going to grow about a half packet of seeds at a time.
here’s the basil in the ground! finally! this is basil with a backstory that’ll be up in a post or two.

small rows of baby bok choy. this is only supposed to take a month or so to come up. i planted half the packet.

basil, 2 rows of daikon seeds, and lots of footprints. i’m not really expecting the daikon to grow that much since the soil seems to be mostly clay and i don’t yet have a shovel or pitchfork or something to really loosen it up.
