i'm a guest on this week's RADIO JERKS
the show is this thursday, january 28th, at 8pm PST (11 EST). i am very excited to be on this and i hope you’ll come listen! there will be no talk about my garden at all. come listen to me tell you about how “sister, sister” and “full house” made me a miserable 10 year old twin, share fond memories of favorite SNES games, and learn how to make your own fedex pope...
TBYRH Kinda Sorta Telethon for Haiti →
this is not a traditional telethon in that we aren’t asking people to donate money (but if you wanna do it, awesome!) but all we’re trying to do is get people to show up at 11pm PST. trust me, it’ll wrap up before conan starts. join ustream, come on in at 11pm, and for every person that shows up (up to 50) TBYRH will donate 1 dollar to the red cross. i like this idea and...
rain delay
it’s january, it’s been raining for days and days, conan o’brien isn’t going to host the tonight show anymore after tonight, and i fell down really hard yesterday and banged up my knee before i went to stand in the rain for 3 and a half hours to try to go to the last tonight show (but gave up). my point is i probably won’t have any updates here for a while until the...

Heather: that's the whole point of sourdough
Heather: is that it was bread dough that you could just like carry around
Heather: because everyone was a filthy miner
Robert: they sell it in the SF airport
Robert: like newspapers
Heather: all seeing prostitutes and gambling and making chinese people build railroads
Heather: they didn't have time to make bread dough in kitchens
Heather: so it could be carried around as dough or baked longer than regular bread
Heather: but it wasn't like hard tack or something
Heather: hard tack is what sailors ate on sea voyages
Heather: I CAN GO ON ABOUT THE HISTORY OF BREAD
Heather: WHO LIKES TO LEARN THINGS ON SATURDAY NIGHTS
Robert: rise above

apartment gardening - starting seeds on your roof
even when the weather is perfect, it’s not always the best idea to start your seeds directly in the garden. small seeds can blow away, birds or bugs might get your bigger seeds, and bad drainage or too much wet weather might cause your seeds to rot in the ground. by starting seeds outside the garden, you can try to control the conditions your seeds are growing in. sometimes it works,...

the weird sprout
this is 2 sprouted cherry tomato plants from the same seed packet. the green sprout on the right is about a month older than the tall sprout with leaves on the left, but they’re from the same packet! i couldn’t figure out what was happening with the sprout on the right, so i decided to crack open the peat pellet to see if there was a rock stuck under the roots or something.
THE...

my first real harvest
on january 2nd 2010 (2 months and 1 day since i started) i picked my first radishes, baby lettuce, and baby bok choy! only some of the radishes were ready - mirabeau (an early slender french breakfast radish) and a couple of the easter egg radishes (a variety of pink, white, red, purple, and lavender radishes).
i got about 3 ounces of radishes this time once they were cleaned up.
i also...
how come you're not putting up as much stuff now?
basically lately it feels like all i do is run out to the garden, snap some pictures, and then pull weeds til it’s too dark to see. this has resulted in me having over a hundred pictures i need to upload to flickr and even more that are up but have no tags or names. i’m slowly getting caught up, but until then, you may enjoy the “Corn Dog Ranch” set on flickr. it has...
