decollate snails
i finally figured out what the weird cone-shaped snail shells i kept finding were - they’re called decollate snails and they are a type of snail that is used in southern california for pest control. they started importing them initially to eat snails that were threatening the citrus crops, but kept them around when brown snails (regular garden snails) became pests to home gardeners. they...

letting the garden dry out
i haven’t been updating as much as i usually do lately because plants look pretty much the goddamn same every day. also, it rained for a few days and i didn’t feel like going by to weed while the ground’s all soggy. in the meantime, i’ve been starting seeds at my office so i have something to take pictures of. i think the ground’s dry enough so i can go weed and water...

i ran by the garden this morning to see what the damage was from the storm last night. so far, so good. the netting held up just fine, but the fences fell over. i guess i need to dig them in or stake the bottoms or something.

setting up netting during a breeze is not fun. i hope none of this blows away next week, because it ended up being like 30 bucks for 2 nets and 2 sets of poles. there is something called “landscaping staples” that are in the mail to secure the edges of the nets but they probably won’t get here til christmas. i’m pretty sure this will keep the birds away for the time...

day 35 - december 5, 2009
i spent too much time setting this up. we’re supposed to get a week of storms starting tomorrow night, but in la that doesn’t really mean anything. as soon as the sprinkles start, it’s STORMWATCH 2009 and all the anchors are out on the street in fishermans’ raincoats. it might get maybe 2 inches over a week. (everybody who doesn’t live in california can stop...

a couple of my friends came to check out the garden today, which was super cool - i hadn’t had any visitors before this - but when we got there i discovered i do not have a snail problem. i have a RAVEN problem. there were about 4 or 5 of them pecking the hell out of my baby bok choy. i guess now i’ll have to make little cages or nets or something to protect my plants. ugh.
everything...
